Layers - Dancing Through the Veil

Dancing through the veil | An immersion in Conscious Dance

Ever felt like there is more to you than what you are presenting?

'Dancing like no one is watching' isn't quite there or the dance you wear for others has become the dance you wear for yourself yet it doesn't quite fit.

Conscious dance allows us to embody emotions and thoughts so we can turn up in life's journey, but sometimes we reach a plateau with no pathways forward, the invitation at this point is to drop a mask (or two) so we can access an authenticity that once was. Dancing like we've never danced before we take our conscious movement practice to the next chapter, gently peeling back layer by layer until we can safely lead the dancer out from behind the veils.

We ask the questions...

How would the dance express itself without a mask?
When I move do I project a certain version of me and does it serve me now?

Our vehicle for this workshop is the Open Floor Conscious Dance practice, journeying through the 4 dimensions of embodiment to realise a more authentic version of ourselves.

4 Dimensions of Embodiment

Physical Dimension – Moving the body to increase sensate awareness.

Emotional Dimension – Allowing your feelings to choreograph your dance.

Mind Dimension – Dancing your thoughts and becoming aware of your awareness.

Soul Dimension – Unifying with the oneness that is the mystery of life.

A wonderful weekend to dance into a deeper sense of 'Self', an opportunity to move through the facade that hides our raw beauty so we may dance to a fuller, more vibrant and natural way of being!
The workshop will gather momentum as the weekend progresses, we will dance, inquire and reflect, sometimes solo, sometimes with others but always leaning on the pillars of community and safety.

The purpose of the weekend is embodiment, becoming fluid, resilient and authentic, bringing mindfulness and presence, acknowledging the layers that make up who we are. The story unfolds as we move the body, releasing the tales embedded in the dance of a million faces.

Spending a weekend immersing in dance is a great opportunity to not only deepen your practice but to forge strong bonds of friendship within the dance community. There will be wild dancing and tender moments with ample time to connect, play, rest, reflect and refuel.

There are no prerequisites to attend this workshop, we welcome everyone to join us with at least some experience of conscious dance. We ask that you check in with us if you feel unsure or are new to this kind of practice so we can ensure you benefit from the weekend.

The Friday evening session can be attended as a stand alone taster evening. The weekend can be booked at the end of Fridays dance providing there are places available.

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.”

Growing the roots for a conscious dance practice

The Workshop is currently full Please email us if you wish to be placed on the waiting list or join us for the Friday evening session.

The workshop will provide you with the physical language enabling you to easily and enjoyably broaden your range of movement on all levels. Moving mindfully, you'll be guided to explore Core Movement Principles of Open Floor; to release stress, increase vitality and dance with fuller expression.
Bare Bones is a dance meditation for building muscular intelligence, the ability to be awake and fluid, to articulate the innate symphony of wisdom and expression waiting just below our skin.
We ask our bodies and let them speak -
What part of me has forgotten how to move?
Where am I fluid and where am I bound?
What gestures purr, hum, hurt, hesitate?
Who do I gravitate towards?
What propels me to shy away and What makes my body sing?

Our inquiry becomes one of ratio: How much of our huge life force is devoted to keeping ourselves moving in repetitive, habitual patterns? How much is left for creativity, loving connections, the willing surrender to change?

Over the weekend we will
- Build sensate awareness and learn to move more freely and expressively through an in-depth exploration and embodiment of the Core Movement Resources.
- Develop physical intelligence and awareness as movers
- Get the body dancing and moving fluidly from the inside out and the outside in.
- Expand our movement vocabulary beyond what we think we already know
- Support each other in becoming more articulate, authentic and embodied movers

The goal is a body that moves with it all and tells the tale. This is the infinite choreography of the Bare Bones.

"I am so surprised at how much it has already affected and is continuing to affect in so many areas of my life in a beautifully positive way."
C.M. after Bare Bones 2017

Free Inside - An Open Floor dance workshop

Free inside.jpg

Those critical inner voices are so insidious.

Sometimes we don’t even notice them, but they go on yacking…operating below our radar, sculpting our posture, squeezing our solar plexus, making us feel anxious or tense. They drive those self-defeating habits that we can’t seem to shake, and they sap our vitality.

And yet, ironically, they were given to us in absolute love. In the hope that we might thrive as mature, functional and creative adults in the world.

We can reconcile this conflict within us, but not if we ignore or bargain with our critic.

In this workshop you will dance with intention and awareness into the Tiger’s Mouth of your Inner Critic – recognizing and feeling how it’s unseen efforts affect your creative flow, your relationship to yourself and others and your ability to be present.

With Open Floor Movement Practice we will mindfully embody tools to understand and disengage from the critic’s dominance. To transform the voices of painful, limiting criticism into unbridled creative flow, streaming joy and freedom to Be. To remember a trusted counsel and a precious ally of a good conscience.

This will be a robust and mature inquiry process that requires your aim to go deep, through the dance and beyond. And I so welcome you into the zestiness of this dance!

Madhuma Thompson brings over 35 years of meditation, embodiment work and spiritual inquiry process to the dance floor. She is an Open Floor Movement teacher and a 5Rhythms Dance teacher facilitating large groups as well as leading smaller more intensive workshops around Australia and abroad.
Her intuitive wisdom and joy in the movement practice is infectious.
Madhuma returns to us after 2 years with her new workshop that will inspire and guide us into our inner most wisdom.

Soul Food - Dancing our Wild Hungers

Soul Food pre final.jpg

“ Too many people are hungry not because there is dearth of food. It is because there is dearth of love and care in human hearts.” SADHGURU JAGGI VASUDEV

We are relational beings, living in a relational universe. Embodying relational intelligence and becoming fluid in the relational field can be soul food that softens and warms our hearts, and delivers us into our most fulfilling, joyful and meaningful life.

The dance floor is a wonderful place to explore this sacred mystery of Self and Other, as well as that mysterious place where the sense of separation finally dissolves into Oneness.

Through Open Floor Movement Practice we will develop skills in the moving embodiment of four basic hungers or aspects of relationship:

- The Hunger for Solitude and relationship to Self
- The Hunger for Connection and relationship to Another

- The Hunger for Belonging and relationship to Group
- The Hunger for Spirit and relationship to Source

Our task as humans is to practice the fine art of balancing all four of these hungers in our lives. Each offers deep medicine and soul food. When we feel out of balance in any one of these areas, we generally feel out of sorts. Most of us are strong in some areas and weak in others.

What are you hungry for in your life right now? Let’s dance together and find out.
All warmly welcome. Come just as you are.

Geordie Jahner, Ph.D. (Psychology), is a dance artist, educator, facilitator of conscious dance practices and expressive arts therapist. Libido Fundamentals

to 26 Nov

Libido Fundamentals

  • The University of Notre Dame (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Carl Jung states that “Libido is appetite in its’ natural state”-  it is an essential part of our body’s natural expression. Complicated one moment, ecstatic the next absent or burdened with expectations of past experiences, this energy within and between us comes to the dance longing for freedom.

The intention in Open Floor Movement practice is to mindfully support our full embodiment. In one dance we may feel juicy, radiant and desirable while at other times we battle feeling awkward or shy. It is often challenging to navigate our own experiences and/or the sexual energies around us.

Libido Fundamentals investigates this complex and creative conundrum by using movement to ground, build and explore our sexual energy. We embrace a wider definition of Libido as life force, birth place of creativity, vitality, presence and aliveness. Because sexuality is so often unconsciously acted out or ignored, the exploration of this territory tends to be intense, intimate, liberating and empowering.

Participants can expect to spend each day engaging in mindful movement practice, group sharing and inquiry along with some didactic education. Nudity and actual genital contact are not a part of this workshop.

This course is an introduction to longer intensives, where we mine the multitude of historical, emotional, relational, creative and spiritual aspects of our sexuality. The challenges and risks of this journey is well worth the pleasure and beauty.

More on the Libido process and watch the video

Cathy Ryan is a 5 rhythms teacher and a founding member of Open Floor International. As well as her work in dance, theater and shamanic practices Cathy delves into vision quests, meditations, yoga, tai chi, clubbing and loving.

Integrating Somatic Experiencing on the Open Floor

Inquiry - a seeking or request for the truth

Join us as we embark on a dynamic exploration of the truth that resides in our own body. Through movement, dance and mindful inquiry, we will journey below the stories about who we are and who we should be.

Guided by a weave of the Open Floor movement practice and Somatic Experiencing® principles, we will strengthen our skills to listen, track and follow our innate emotional intelligence, discovering how it speaks to us through sensation, textures and tones. From our practice on the dance floor, you will develop greater trust in your body's natural intelligence that will enable you to live with more awareness, vitality and joy.

Stacey Butcher is an Open Floor Movement Teacher and a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner based in California. She is also a Reiki Master/Teacher and Certified 5Rhythms® Teacher. Stacey has been dedicated to the healing arts for over 20 years and has studied with healers and teachers from around the world. Her teaching is infused with passion, deep presence and humor. She is an inspirational facilitator and is skilled at holding space for transformation.

All levels of experience welcome.

This workshop counts as 13 hours of prerequisites and electives for the Open Floor Teacher Training.

"It is a rare occasion when you can find a teacher who can hold both form and formlessness, provide guidance and allow autonomy, and work with life's paradox with such skillful grace and ease. Count yourself lucky when you do. And if you haven't had the good fortune of such an encounter, hurry to one of Stacey's classes so you can experience this particular gift. She is masterful."

HELD Hakomi on the Open Floor

  • North Fremantle Community Hall (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Using the movement practice of Open Floor dance and the self-inquiry principles of Hakomi we will navigate this territory. Moving away from our habits of disconnection, and feeling more centred and grounded, to take delight in life.

Open Floor invites us to explore how it is to feel held in the different aspects of ourselves: the physical, emotional, mental and spirit levels of self. How does it feel when we are connected to ourselves in solitude? How does it feel when we are connected to people around us, when we sense that we are at home and we belong?

Hakomi principles invite us to be in loving presence in all that we do, with ourselves and with each other. Then we feel safe to authentically express what is happening right now. Hakomi utilises the principle of organicity, that we are organically and naturally geared towards growth and evolution, and that we are ok as we are.

Ajay(Hakomi) and Theva(Open Floor) will guide you through a day of dance and inquiry into a space of loving connection with self and others

This workshop will be a deep journey into emotional intelligence, emotional resilience and learning to live your truth. Madhuma travels to us from Melbourne where her work has been profound and life changing for her students.

It is easy to be real when we are on our true path and aligned with our values. But when things are not going our way it is easy to move into resistance. Our minds, bodies and emotions throw up negative, self sabotaging loops and patterns that can take us out and away from our immediate experience. Love is the central thing. When our love for 'being real' becomes stronger than our reactions and stories, a tipping point occurs, and with that comes a willingness to 'BE' with whatever arises. What is real and true comes into focus.

Buoyed by our movement practice and our community of willing souls, a real possibility is offered for you to access new layers of emotional intelligence, emotional resilience, and choice.

This is a love affair with the real you. There is no going back, But why on this sweet earth would you?

Madhuma's teaching has grown out of 35 years of meditation, spiritual enquiry and the living wisdom of Osho's lineage. Having trained to teach 5Rhythms with Gabrielle Roth in 2007, she branched out to become an Open Floor Movement Teacher. Madhuma aim is to hold space with a gentle creative power. I am certain whether your dance is one of despair, rapture or simply 'ho-hum', it is the perfect doorway into a more real, alive and wondrous way of being here and now.
